How to Make a Pipe from Aluminum Foil

The aluminum foil pipe, or "foiler" as it is often referred to, is a very popular choice for smoking device among younger smokers who may find it difficult to purchase a pipe.  The simplicity of construction and availability of materials make it very appealing.  Read on to find out how to make one!

Aluminum Foil Pipe

Pros: The aluminum foil pipe is typically free assuming you have a steady source of aluminum foil and even if you have to buy some, a single roll could probably make fifty or so pipes.  It's very easy to make and takes only a couple minutes with experience.  It is very portable and the bowl can be packed and folded over to take out on the road, and when it's been used or if caught in the act, it only needs to be crumpled up and thrown away.  The foiler is something of an initiation for young stoners.  I myself and most of my friends lost our weed-virginity to foil pipes.  As a result, using foil pipes among regular circles commands feelings of nostalgia and is great for a change of pace.

Cons: The pipe lacks a choke, which translates to decreased efficiency and torched weed.  Also, the smoke is very harsh and the pipe itself heats up very quickly.  Expect occasional minor burns.  It is relatively fragile, so if taken out, be careful.  Some research suggests that aluminum fumes and dust can cause lung irritation, but that research is geared to constant exposure in industrial settings.  Occasional use of the foil pipe does not do any more damage than the hot smoke.  The taste leaves something to be desired and is rather metallic, but it is tolerable.

Materials: You will need the following items to construct the pipe:

  • Pen or pencil for rolling the pipe into shape.
  • Marker or something round, but larger than the pen for the bowl.  In a bind, a finger may be used but it is more difficult.
  • Aluminum foil square approximately six inches on both sides.

Construction

First, you want to set the sheet of aluminum foil on a flat surface and fold less than an inch of foil inward on the right and left ends. (See figure 1)

Next, place the pen along the bottom of the foil sheet around 90% of the way.  Place the marker in the space remaining. (See figure 2)

Then simply roll foil around the pen and marker so that a hollow cylinder is formed. (See figure 3, figure 4, and figure 5)

All that is left now is to bend the marker and pen at an angle to separate the bowl from the stem. (See figure 6

Once the bend has been made, remove the pen and marker. Check the airflow by blowing into the pipe. You should be able to exhale steadily with mild resistance.  It may be necessary to press down at the base of the bowl in order to tighten the airflow. (See figure 7)

Now your aluminum foil pipe is complete.  (See figure 8)  The pipe can be used in the same manner as any other metal pipe without a choke.  Simply pack marijuana into the bowl just under the lip.  Bring the flame of a lighter to the marijuana and inhale.  Be prepared for some minor discomfort with this one and make sure you bring some water bottles.

Variations

This is the most basic aluminum foil pipe that I know of.  Some common variations include fortifying the edge of the stem by folding over some of the foil while the pen is still attached.  People have gotten really creative with what specifically they use to roll the pipe around.  I have seen foilers that resemble Sherlock Holmes-type pipes.  If you have an interesting variation on the classic foiler, please email it to me to be featured on this site.
